He Thinks He’s John Wayne

He Thinks He's John Wayne. Painting by Oliver Smith ©2017

(measurements) spray paint on canvas. 2012

This painting is obviously based on a scene from the Hollywood  western True Grit. The reason it was made was more to do with an awareness that I had reinvented the actual scene in a much more idealistic light, creating a much more dynamic and fantastic scene. So, when I watched the film back I was surprised how different it really was to how I’d remembered it.

Basically, the goal in this painting was to recreate the scene without watching the original film or using any scene imagery or promotional material. I had to collage images together and literally construct the scene from memory.

This is exactly the same process for both my paintings Shogun ExitKeep Right and Honey Bunny.
